Providing Cost Effective Internet Connectivity to Rural Areas and Small Towns

Nodes provide Internet + VOIP in rural areas of Central California, CA and Red River, New Mexico.

The ability to provide high performance with a large number of hops (node-to-node) connections is a key advantage in small towns and rural areas. This is especially relevant when the subscriber density is low and the bandwidth from each Ethernet feed must to be distributed over a wider area to offset the lower subscriber density. Earlier generation mesh products run out of steam after a few hops - the available bandwidth degrades beyond acceptable levels. Hence they are not cost effective in areas where there is low subscriber density and the mesh must cover a wider areas - which in turn implies more hops. [More]

Unlike previous generation products, Meshdynamics patented third generation technology uses two backhaul radios and dynamic channel interference avoidance. This means easy installation, high bandwidth and low latency for demanding application. It also means that the network has minimal loss over multiple hops, unlike others. The result: wider wireless coverage and fewer Ethernet feeds.

In Red River New Mexico, the customer had installed a competitive product that could not deliver adequate performance. Red River is a long, narrow municipality and required nine hops from the far end of the network to the wired Ethernet/Internet connection. The 20+ node network provides ISP data service inside homes and businesses as well the outdoor ski areas. Video monitoring is also supported so Skiers can view the ski conditions through the eyes of an IP based camera, accessible over the internet.

In Fresno, Central California, a local ISP decided to initiate Internet services since DSL and Cable Internet were not available. A first try with another wireless mesh vendor proved unsuccessful due to poor network performance over multiple hops It did not make business sense to replenish the mesh with multiple Ethernet feeds - there were not enough subscribers to pay for them.  The ISP read the performance analysis on the Meshdynamics website (link below) and bought a few nodes to "try out" Since then, 60+ Meshdynamics nodes are mounted on structures, water towers, etc. providing service inside and outside local homes and businesses.  The network continues to grow as additional adjacent communities are brought into the system.
